Women's Museum, ExxonMobil to Promote Science and Technology Careers

ExxonMobil Science Day to Encourage Opportunities for Dallas-Area Girls

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Women's Museum and ExxonMobil are teaming up to present ExxonMobil Science Day, Wednesday, September 30, 2009, a program created to encourage and motivate Dallas-area girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics related fields.

Female students from Irma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School, Anson Jones Elementary School and Fellowship Christian Academy will have the opportunity to hear from a female geophysicist and enjoy an interactive science show. Guest speaker Maria C. Guedez, a native of Venezuela, will offer insight into her amazing journey from studies in Caracas, a master's degree in earth science at Rice University to ultimately a career at ExxonMobil Exploration Company.

"We believe it is vital to continually reinforce to young people that math and science are fun and exciting careers to pursue," said Truman Bell, senior program officer for education and diversity, ExxonMobil. "We hope that this science and engineering show sparks the girls' imaginations and encourages them to stay interested in these important subjects. The Women's Museum is doing amazing work in this community, and we are proud to be a long-standing partner with them."

After the presentation, students will participate in the Earth Seen: Engineering the Future, show by EarthCapades Environmental Vaudeville. The show will feature unicycles, juggling, and comedy to entertain and educate audiences of all ages. This energetic show is designed to encourage young children to take an active interest science study. The students have the opportunity to interact throughout the show as "engineers" while learning about science, ecology and the earth. Sponsored by ExxonMobil, the show is currently being performed during the State Fair of Texas daily at noon and 5 p.m. on The Women's Museum outdoor stage.

"The Women's Museum is delighted to present this unique show to educate and entertain our visitors," said Wanda Brice, CEO of The Women's Museum. "ExxonMobil is a great partner as we strive to showcase science- and math-based fields for girls."

Students will leave ExxonMobil Science Day with information on career options in the science field and firsthand experiences with engineering, earth science and energy.

A Smithsonian affiliate, The Women's Museum is the nation's only comprehensive women's history museum that chronicles the lives of American women through interactive exhibits. The Women's Museum is supported, in part, by the City of Dallas, Office of Cultural Affairs. Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m. (closed Mondays).
