ExxonMobil Awards $1 Million to Society of Exploration Geophysicists

IRVING, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM) announced today it will award $1 million to the Society of Exploration Geophysicists Foundation in support of the organization's mission to prepare students from around the world for careers in geophysics. The company announced the pledge at the SEG Seventy-Seventh Annual Meeting in San Antonio on September 24.

The National Academies 2005 blue ribbon panel report "Rising Above the Gathering Storm" concluded that improving American students' performance in math and science is the most effective way to increase the Unites States' global competitiveness. The ExxonMobil grant will be used to establish an SEG/ExxonMobil Student Education Program that provides short courses for students. The courses will provide opportunities for students to apply their classroom knowledge while integrating geology, geophysics and engineering in a business environment.

The program will consist of multiple annual education events around the world. Each year one event will be organized in conjunction with the SEG Annual Meeting and one will be held in Europe. The third event will be organized in the Middle East, North Africa or Russia, alternating between the locations. Each education event will be two days in length and designed for participation by 25 to 30 students. ExxonMobil will also provide in-kind donations for the program that include instructors and student materials.
