We invest in our people and communities

ExxonMobil aims to be a preferred business partner, employer, neighbor, and supplier. Our business presence should have a positive impact on the communities where we operate.

We work to safeguard the health and security of our employees and the public, deliver social and economic benefits, and uphold respect for human rights in all of our operations worldwide

Safety is a core value

Continuous enhancements in process safety

Process safety focuses on managing hazards that can arise from the complex processes and equipment that are essential to our business. The primary purpose is to safely manage hydrocarbons, chemicals, and process water through all phases of our operations.

We collaborate with our peers and industry associations to improve process safety performance across the industry. From 2016 through 2021, we achieved a 31% reduction in Tier 1 safety events.

Commitment to an industry-leading culture of safety

ExxonMobil is committed to protecting the safety and health of our workforce, as well as our customers and the public.

Our safety culture promotes systems, processes, tools, and behaviors aimed at eliminating safety-related incidents. In 2021, we achieved an industry-leading Lost Time Incident Rate (LTIR) of 0.02 per 200,000 work hours. We aspire to create and maintain an environment where Nobody Gets Hurt.

Our communities

We seek to contribute to the social and economic progress of the communities where we operate, and we believe that respecting human rights, managing our impacts, and making valued social investments are integral to the success of our business. We work with governments, other companies, and nongovernmental organizations to understand community goals and address needs such as health care, education, and economic development.

Our approach to community engagement includes the following core elements: identification and assessment of potential impacts; human rights; community engagement and grievance management; community health, safety, and security; local economic development; land use, resettlement, and livelihood restoration; and cultural heritage and Indigenous peoples. We take an integrated approach to managing risk and identifying opportunities among these often-interconnected elements in a broad range of settings.
